Course Introduction The European Course in Tropical Epidemiology ECTE is
a short intensive basic course in epidemiology and medical statistics.
The course is intended
for physicians, nurses, biologists, anthropologists, health program managers,
health administrators and other professionals working in the health sector
in tropical countries or with an interest in public health in tropical
countries. Emphasis is on methodology and the practical application of
epidemiological tools in developing countries. ECTE is a collaborative
venture of various European Centres of Tropical Medicine and Public Health
and is held annually at a different venue. The 2010 edition will be hosted
by the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp, Belgium.

Learning objectives
Knowledge
and understanding
On completion of the course, the student should:
- Have
knowledge about core epidemiological and statistical terms, as well
as insight in qualitative methods.
- Be
able to describe epidemiological study designs such as cross-sectional,
cohort, case-control and ecological studies, and randomised controlled
trials.
- Have
knowledge about screening, surveillance and outbreak investigations.
- Have
understanding of the relation between epidemiology and social science
and health economics
Skills
and abilities
On
completion of the course, the student should:
- Have
basic epidemiological and statistical skills for planning, conducting
and reporting field studies to assess health problems and service delivery
- Demonstrate
an ability to use statistical software for data entry, data checking
and analysis.

exercises using the software package EPI-INFO.

Prerequisites
The course is
appropriate for those without formal training in epidemiology or statistics.
However the course is intensive and applicants should have a good command of
English.
Student Assessment
Attendance is compulsory
and is a requirement in order to receive a certificate equivalent to 5 ECTS.
A written group work is presented and examined at the end of the course.

A comprehensive
course manual with handouts will be distributed at the beginning of the
course.

Course
Fee The course fee is 2100 EUR.
This includes participation in the course,
the course manual and handouts, refreshments during
coffee breaks, a reception and the course dinner.
The fee does not include travel, accommodation and meals.

Participants
are responsible for travel arrangements.
Antwerp can
be reached both by train and air (Zaventem = International Airport of Brussels
BXL).

On request, a list of such accommodation possibilities
will be sent.
Certain foreign citizens

The number of
participants is limited to 35. Therefore, applicants should register
as soon as possible.
Application Deadline: April 15th 2010
Selection of candidates will be done on a first come first served basis
and will be based on their profiles’ match with the course target
audience. Applicants will be informed as soon as possible of the decision.
Course Fees Deadline for payment: June 1st 2010
Details on mode of payment for admitted students will be given by the
Secretariat upon acceptance of the candidate. Admission to the course
will be confirmed and necessary documents for the visa process (if
required) will be sent upon reception of payment.
Fees are not reimbursable
in case of cancellation of attendance.
